- The basic principles of tunnel construction including methods of tunnelling, the risks associated with tunnelling and the different ground conditions that can be encountered;

- Communication of identified risks and risk management practice;
- Understanding the hazards and controls required for plant and equipment during tunnelling works;
- Generic operations that take place within shaft top and pit bottom areas as well as portals and understand how they are relevant to tunnelling operations.
