The CPCS A31 Ride on Roller Course for Experienced Operators is ideal for any roller operator who needs to gain a recognised training certificate to operate a roller on site.
Objectives:
The ROR course run by Quality Safety Training provides delegates with instruction in the correct operation of ride on rollers. The A31 course is accredited by the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) which is a widely recognised plant training certification scheme.
Quality Safety Training’s tutors all have industry experience so will be able to effectively teach delegates the requirements of both the theory and practical elements of the ride on roller. Both of which need to be passed in order for a CPCS card to be issued.
What Does the Course Cover:
- Pre-start, running checks and shut down procedures
- Loading and unloading for transportation
- How to set the roller for travel
- On-site hazards and how to identify and avoid them
- How to recognise compacted and uncompacted areas
- Any conditions that may affect the stability of the roller
- How to work safely near unsupported edges
Who is the Course for:
- Delegates who have had previous experience of operating ride on rollers but who need to brush up on their skills before taking the tests
- Anyone who would like a refresher on their skills
All delegates taking this experienced ride on roller course will need to attend one day of training before taking their test on a separate day.

Mandatory Entry Requirements:
- Delegates must have completed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment touch screen test within the last 2 years
- Must have a good understanding of spoken and written English
- Can carry out pre-start, running checks and shut down procedures
- Be able to set up the roller for travel both on the highway and on site
- Can travel in a forward / reverse direction through restrictions, on level ground, unlevel ground and in areas of restricted movement
- Be able to set up the roller for travel and set up for compaction duties
What Does the Exam Entail:
- Verbal theory test
- Practical assessment
Delegates are advised to revise the theory test questions before attending the course, as there will be limited time for this in the 1 day of training.
What Card Will I Get:
Delegates that pass both the practical and theory elements of the exam will receive a red CPCS Trained Operator card that will be valid for 2 years.
During the 2 years that the card is valid for, delegates must complete a level 2 NVQ in ride on roller in order to progress to a blue Competent Operator card.
