NPORS Card Courses

QST is one of the UK’s NPORS training providers specialising in the construction industry.

Training with NPORS: The Future of Plant Operator Education

The National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) has gained a reputation as a top-notch training program in the United Kingdom. Though not as well-known as the CPCS card scheme, NPORS has made great strides in improving its training and testing procedures, earning recognition from a number of construction firms. In fact, industry leader BuildUK has given its stamp of approval to NPORS.

One of the things that sets NPORS apart from other programs is its flexibility. Instead of forcing trainees to come to a specific training facility, NPORS offers on-site training. This approach has proved popular with many individuals and organisations. Recently, NPORS took a big step forward by aligning itself with CSCS. This partnership means that those who successfully complete NPORS’ HS&E test can have their training cards embossed with the CSCS logo. This offers an extra level of credibility and recognition for those seeking to work in the construction industry.

Besides being flexible and reputable, NPORS offers plant operators a chance to improve their abilities and knowledge. They can accomplish this by attaining certification as Trained Operators or Experienced Operators, which is based on their experience level. These qualifications can be earned by undergoing the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) assessment procedure.

What are NPORS Construction Plant Courses?

The NPORS training program has been gaining traction in the UK construction industry in recent years, with notable recognition from industry leaders such as BuildUK. While it may not have reached the same level of popularity as the CPCS card scheme, NPORS has made significant progress in improving its training and testing protocols to meet the demands of construction firms seeking high-quality training for their workers. One of the key benefits of NPORS is its flexible approach to training, which offers on-site training in addition to traditional training centres. Additionally, NPORS has collaborated closely with CSCS, enabling operators who pass the relevant HS&E test to have their training cards displaying the CSCS logo for added credibility. Is an NPORS card the same as a CSCS card?

The CSCS and NPORS cards are essential documents that demonstrate competence across multiple industries. Although the CSCS card is exclusively applicable to the construction industry, the NPORS card primarily targets plant operators. Nevertheless, it is essential to note that the NPORS card is recognised as a partner card scheme by the CSCS. This recognition ensures that both cards hold equal validity and are acceptable when presented at site gates.

How to get  NORPS CSCS Embossed Card?

To get a Labourers CSCS embossed card, you must have two things:

  1. An accreditation at the QCF Level 1, or its equivalent, in safety and wellbeing within a construction setting.
  2. Complete the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test (HS&E).

Firstly, to obtain a Green CSCS embossed Card, individuals must demonstrate their knowledge of Health and Safety in a Construction Environment by completing the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test (HS&E). Those who already possess a QCF Level 1 Award are eligible to book the test and receive their certification upon passing. However, those who do not have this qualification must obtain an equivalent certification, such as the NPORS Construction Safety Awareness Course (S001), which is recognised as an equal alternative to the QCF Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environment by CPN Training.

Types of NPORS CSCS Embossed Cards:

NPORS (traditional) operator card

  • Individuals who are employed outside of the construction industry are eligible for the NPORS (Traditional) Operator Card. Unlike the operator card that features the CSCS logo which is mandatory for those working in construction, the NPORS traditional card adheres to the same standards and achievement methods as the NPORS CSCS embossed operator card route but does not bear the CSCS logo. This is because non-construction industries have different requirements compared to construction. The card can be registered for 3 or 5 years depending on the specific requirements of the industry or company. It is crucial to note that individuals who work in the construction sector must adhere to the

NPORS CSCS embossed card route. Note: NPORS CSCS embossed card route is mandatory for individuals operating in the construction sector.

NORPS CSCS embossed occupational work supervisor gold card

  • NPORS has just announced that it has received CSCS approval to offer the Occupational Work Supervisor Gold Card for Plant Operations. This is great news for those who have completed the Level 3 (S)NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision and can show evidence of their endorsed occupation in Plant Operations. Eligible individuals can now apply for the card and enjoy the benefits it brings. We are delighted to offer this opportunity to individuals in the industry and cannot wait to see how it positively impacts our cardholders.

Construction site safety scheme

  • The CSS Scheme is a leading provider of health and safety training courses that cater to operatives, supervisors, and managers in the construction industry. Our courses are designed to address critical concerns such as environmental issues and risks, and equip participants with the expertise and knowledge required to manage safety effectively on construction sites. Our comprehensive range of courses includes the Site Safety Awareness (SSA) course, which spans over 7 hours, Construction Site Safety Supervisor (CSSS), and Construction Site Safety Manager (CSSM). All of our courses are approved and mapped by CITB, making grant claims quick and easy. Our Construction Site Safety Scheme courses have gained recognition from BuildUK and are highly regarded in the industry. Enrolling in CSS Scheme training will help you create a safe and secure working environment for all stakeholders on your construction site.

Current cardholders wishing to apply for a transitional card

  • Those of you who possess an NPORS card and are seeking to obtain a transitional NPORS/CSCS card will be delighted to learn that npors.com is now accepting applications starting from mid-September 2016. You can either apply independently or through your employer to avail of this facility.

Existing NPORS card holder – No (s)NVQ held

  • As an NPORS card holder without an (S)NVQ, you will be issued a Trained Operator card that will be valid for two years upon application. During this period, it will be necessary for you to register for and achieve the (S)NVQ along with unit credits that are pertinent to the plant categories mentioned on your Trained Operator card.

Existing NPORS card holder – (s)NVQ held

  • If you have the necessary (S)NVQ qualification and the appropriate unit credits for the machinery categories listed on your NPORS card, we will issue you a Competent Operator card upon receipt of your application. This card will remain valid for a period of five years. Additionally, we will provide you with a CPD record/operator logbook that will keep track of your professional development and operating hours in your workplace. Please note that all applicants must provide proof of passing the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within the two years prior to applying for the card.

New entrants who wish to apply for an NPORS CSCS embossed card

  • If you’re looking to acquire an NPORS CSCS embossed card as a novice, the first step is to undergo the mandatory training and assessment procedures in accordance with standard protocol. For comprehensive instructions on how to apply, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

New entrant – no (s) NVQ held

  • If you’re new to the job and don’t have an (S)NVQ, you’ll need to take a test before you can become a fully-fledged operator. If you pass the test, you’ll be given a Trained Operator card that’s good for two years. During that time, you’ll need to earn the necessary (S)NVQ with the right unit credits that match the plant categories on your card. Once that’s done, you’ll be issued a Competent Operator card that’s good for five years. You’ll also get a CPD record or operator logbook.

New entrant – (S) NVQ held

  • If you’re new to the industry and already have the necessary (S)NVQ certification, you may be eligible to receive a Competent Operator card after successfully completing the relevant NPORS assessments. This card will remain valid for 5 years and will indicate the categories of plant you’re qualified to operate. Furthermore, operators who secure this card will receive a CPD record or operator logbook to keep track of their professional development and work hours. It’s essential to note that all operators must provide proof of having passed the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within two years prior to applying for the card.

How do I renew my NPORS trained operator card?

As a seasoned CSCS NPORS operator, you likely value the significance of staying updated with current industry standards through consistent refresher training. If you are operating as a plant operator, you may be curious about the steps involved in renewing your NPORS card. It is common for many plant operators to inquire about the renewal process, often asking “What’s the process to renew my NPORS card?”

  There are 2 available options:

  • Submit a renewal notification form, signed by your employer to confirm your competence and accident-free use of the machinery during your employment
  • Complete refresher training for the chosen categories on your NPORS card. Recommended to ensure you are in line with the latest industry standards, get the opportunity to benefit from a highly experienced and knowledgeable expert, and receive the peace of mind of independent accreditation.
