The primary aim of this instructional Locate Utility Services cat 1 course is to impart individuals with the essential proficiencies to locate utility services in a secure and efficient manner, utilising legally sanctioned detection techniques.  

The programme will encompass detailed training on the usage of CAT and Genny equipment, which will be imparted through a blend of interactive lectures and practical assessments.

Who is EUSR? 

The Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) is a digital platform that curates and archives the training and skill records of experts working in the energy and utilities sectors. Professionals who have completed training and/or evaluation through EUSR schemes have their achievements recorded in their EUSR registration, along with their qualifications and authorisations. Each individual’s EUSR record may contain multiple scheme registrations with varying expiry dates.  

Once registration is complete, individuals receive a unique EUSR ID number and a photo ID card displaying their current endorsements and expiry dates.  EUSR, as part of the Energy & Utility Skills Group, endeavours to provide a comprehensive and dependable resource for professionals working in the energy and utilities industries. 

EUSR Category Course Objectives  

Attendees will leave with a solid understanding of how to properly use a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and signal generator to confirm the existence of services in the designated area. Moreover, they will receive in-depth instruction on how to accurately interpret and analyse service plans and drawings to ensure a smooth and expedient implementation process.

  • The hazards and risks of working in and around existing underground services 
  •  The different functions of the CAT and what they mean 
  • The different functions of the genny and what they mean 
  • BSI PAS 128 – understanding what this is and what the different survey types are under BSI PAS 128 
  •  How to deal with damaged services and what the implications are of service strikes 

Locate Utility Services cat 1 Assessment and Certification  

In order to gauge the competence of our representatives, we have created a collaborative project that involves a thorough examination of potential workplace dangers. Following this, we plan to evaluate their capabilities through the use of specialised equipment such as the CAT and Genny, which will help us to determine the precise location of relevant services.

Who Needs a Cat 1 Card? 

If you are someone who relies on utility drawings or uses location equipment to identify underground services, or if you need to know the potential hazards associated with hitting underground services, then the EUSR Locate Utility Services Category 1 certification is for you. It is especially helpful for managers, supervisors, safety professionals, and operatives who operate underground services detection devices. With this certification, you will have the knowledge and skills needed to reduce the risks and dangers of working with underground services, making the workplace safer for everyone involved.  

What is a Cat 1 Card?  

Individuals working in the water, power, or gas industries may be obligated to secure an EUSR card. This particular type of card is specifically tailored to utility workers and serves as an alternative to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. The EUSR card grants access to construction sites, but it is solely intended for utility workers. Therefore, only those with the appropriate expertise and qualifications can carry out their job responsibilities on these sites. Once the training is completed and the necessary criteria is met, delegates will obtain an EUSR card that will remain valid for three years. 

How Long is a Cat 1 Card Valid? 

The EUSR card is exclusively designed to authorise utility workers to perform their tasks. Conversely, the CSCS card is intended for construction workers who require authorisation to carry out their duties on-site. The validity of CSCS cards lasts for five years, while EUSR cards’ validity ranges from three to five years, depending on the type of courses completed. 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 

This course can be combined with Category 2 Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices to make a 1 1/2 day course. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 

Delegates must be able to read and understand English. 

GRANTS:

For CITB registered companies, £140pp grant can be claimed back on successful completion of the course.
